Back from the Work Life Congress…

Thank you for tweeting us your views on what a 21st Century Workplace means to you!  SHRM is back from the Work Life Congress and ready to reenergize its commitment to work-life flexibility issues.  Mary Kaylor, Global Public Relations Manager, shares her take on the Conference.

Working Mothers — and Fathers — united on October 27-29 in New York City to attend Working Mother Magazine’s - Working Mother’s 13th Annual 100 Best Companies Worklife Congress.  The conference, which was held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, celebrated the 100 companies that are making work-life balance possible in a down economy while offering concurrent sessions focusing on diversity and workplace flexibility.  SHRM’s sponsorship included the opening night reception and an exhibit booth that showcased the Society’s commitment to work-life balance issues.

SHRM’s Amy Thompson, Kathleen Coulombe and Mary Kaylor greeted more than 400 attendees during the exposition and discussed SHRM’s commitment to workplace flexibility.  Copies of SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Principles white paper, Setting the New HR Agenda policy position booklet, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day workplace flexibility ads were on display at the booth.  SHRM’s 60th Anniversary book titled “A History of Human Resources” was distributed to several expo attendees, many of whom were SHRM members and excited to see us at the conference.  Miniature bottles of SHRM-branded hand sanitizer gel were a timely conference bag gift, and SHRM-branded nail files were a popular grab at the expo booth by the busy working moms.

Several attendees were asked to complete the question, “Work life balance is important to me and my family because…” and their responses were recorded and displayed on a monitor at the SHRM expo booth.  The majority of answers focused on the importance of spending time with family.

  • It was so good to see SHRM represented at the Working Mother 100 Best Company conference. This event showcases companies that are working hard to create a culture of flex and having SHRM’s information and involvement is extremely valuable. FlexPaths looks forward to continuing to support your effort in this area.
