E-Verify, for all of its imperfections, is the best tool available today. Since none of the states are permitting their drivers license database to be accessed for E-Verify the system is not as effective as it might be for combatting identity fraud. The obvious solution would appear to get the states to provide access to the drivers license so that when an applicant applies for a job and presents a drivers license, the employer can access the photo from the state database and compare that to the photo on the drivers license that was presented by the employee.

Fix the problems, don’t abandon the program. Let’s keep in mind that it’s purpose is to verify that someone is eligible to work, not to detect identity fraud.
